Over the past seven years, the number of reported cases of child abuse and neglect has almost tripled in Australia. In 1999-2000, there were 107,134 reports.
In 2007-2008, there were 55 120 substantiated cases of child abuse nationally.
Last year there were more than 872 new reports of child abuse per day. That equates to one child reported abused or neglected every two minutes.
In 2007-2008, 34 279 children required court action in order to ensure their protection from abuse and neglect.
The number of referrals to the Australian Childhood Foundation has increased by 20 per cent during the 2008/2009 Financial Year.
