Australian, and now international, actor Liam Hemsworth has given his support to the Australian Childhood Foundation by becoming an Ambassador. His first task has been to launch the Foundation's, Childhood Hero Appeal which will be held in June.
A Childhood Hero is an ordinary Australian who wants to make a real difference to Australia's most vulnerable children. It achieves its aim by celebrating the fun, innocence and importance of childhood, and reminds adults how important it is to be a hero to a child.
Attending the launch at the Centre for Children in Mitcham, Victoria, Liam spoke of his own blessed childhood, and having parents who supported his dreams every step of the way.
"I have the best parents you can have. They have worked in child protection for twenty years and have only ever given me encouragement and support."
"The world is a scary enough place as it is for children. It is important that home should always be a safe place for them."
When asked if he believed he was a hero to children. Liam modestly responded: "I don't know if I'm a hero to children, but I'd like to be. I'd like to be a good role model."
Research conducted by the Australian Childhood Foundation in 2006 showed that children's heroes are their mums (42%) and dads (31%). They were clearly ranked 1 and 2.
The Funds raised from our June Appeal will provide counselling to traumatised children to help them recover from the impact of abuse, neglect and family violence.
Childhood Hero Day will be held on Wednesday 23rd June 2010. You can make a donation by clicking on the Donate Now button above.
